Topic THIRTEEN: Society's Expectation and Teacher Professionalism
It is normal for a person wanting the best for himself or his acquaintance, same goes to parents who want the best education for their children, so they expect more from the teacher and school. Society's expectation can be defined as internalized about what people should do or how they should act. It can be a great force for individual changes and also can be pressures to fulfill it.
Nowadays, most parents were placing 100% of their responsibility of educating children onto the teachers' shoulder because of their busyness of work. Thus, it is adding petrol onto a blazing fire as the teachers also need to keep up with their KPI (Key Performance Indicator) to achieve certain results. In Malaysia, Standard Guru Malaysia (SGM) was introduced in 2009 to establish high competency standards for the teaching profession and to increase the status of teachers in Malaysia.
As a result, the percentages of teachers having mental health disorders are increasing especially in 2019, when the Covid-19 spread all across the world. The society are pressuring the government to open the school, and veteran teachers are forced to adapt with utilization of IT to teach the students virtually.
There are positive and negative consequences of the pandemic. For example, Malaysian teachers and students become competent in using electronic gadgets. However, the attendances of students are disappointing day by day as they were absent because of personal feeling of burnt out from attending online classes.
Even though such situation affecting the teacher's efficiency in handling the students, they need to be keep professional even deep down inside their heart, they are disappointed with the students and the parents as they did not give cooperation in making online classes successful.
