Nafisa Nazrin's

better late than never

It is normal for a person wanting the best for himself or his acquaintance, same goes to parents who want the best education for their children, so they expect more from the teacher and school. Society's expectation can be defined as internalized about what people should do or how they should act. It can be a great force for individual changes and also can be pressures to fulfill it.

Nowadays, most parents were placing 100% of their responsibility of educating children onto the teachers' shoulder because of their busyness of work. Thus, it is adding petrol onto a blazing fire as the teachers also need to keep up with their KPI (Key Performance Indicator) to achieve certain results. In Malaysia, Standard Guru Malaysia (SGM) was introduced in 2009 to establish high competency standards for the teaching profession and to increase the status of teachers in Malaysia.

As a result, the percentages of teachers having mental health disorders are increasing especially in 2019, when the Covid-19 spread all across the world. The society are pressuring the government to open the school, and veteran teachers are forced to adapt with utilization of IT to teach the students virtually.

There are positive and negative consequences of the pandemic. For example, Malaysian teachers and students become competent in using electronic gadgets.  However, the attendances of students are disappointing day by day as they were absent because of personal feeling of burnt out from attending online classes.

Even though such situation affecting the teacher's efficiency in handling the students, they need to be keep professional even deep down inside their heart, they are disappointed with the students and the parents as they did not give cooperation in making online classes successful.

Social issues at school such as bullying, racism, mental health issues and more are important to pay attention to aside from teaching at school. Once becoming a teacher, we cannot run from facing these kind of situations.

The news of bullying among students is alarming as there was even death case happened because of it. As a teacher, we are expected to become problem solver for every issues occurred at school. How can the teachers help in becoming the problem solver of the social issues?

The teacher should be observant to any signs shown by students. For instance, students with family issues or mental health disorder tend to be quiet and always alone. Thus, the teacher need to approach him and check on how the student are doing. If the student is ready to talk to you about their concerns, listen to it attentively. Moreover, the teacher must create a welcoming environment and deal with the student in calming and caring manners, so the student will feel safe and comfortable.

However, this is not the teacher's responsibility only to alert with behavioral changes of the students. The parents, peers and society also responsible in recognizing changes in an individual to avoid unfortunate events from happening. Hence, all units must work together in creating a harmonious environment for mutual good.

Unequal achievement at school among students is mostly caused by 'social class' factor. It means that students from upper class often receives privileges in education and career opportunities rather than students from lower class. Hence, the social class issue has hampered students' ability to achieve academically. According to Bernstein, children from the upper and middle classes have an easier time adjusting to the school system. This might happened because they were exposed to early education at home which is similar to school's academic subjects. Unlike students from lower class, their first education is primary school. Only some of them have great parents that prioritize early education at home.

In addition, students from lower class are more likely to drop out of school earlier and disinterest in pursuing their studies in tertiary education because it requires large sum of money to spend on a child's education. The parents will not take the risk for that. Thus, the lower class students did not get the opportunity to change their family socioeconomic status by getting better and secure job.

In my opinion, it is understandable for the parents for not supporting their children in education because of their financial instability. However, the bigger risk we are willing to face, the better result we might get. Plus, government has provided some incentives and supports for B40 family in many areas. For example, PTPTN and various scholarships to assist the students from lower class. Therefore, we can conclude that unequal achievement among students causes by social class are no longer valid since the era has changes. Parents has no reason to obstruct their talented and genius children from education just because of financial problem since there many ways to overcome that one problem.

In this topic, I am attracted to the sub-topic "Home environment affect student's education". It is true that parental education influences the learning progress of children at school. For example, educated parents can provide their children with advices regarding academic matters and career paths since they have already gone through the same education process. Most educated parents also has a good relationship with their children in which they can change ideas among themselves and listen to their child's opinion on education.

Unlike, less-educated parents, they tend to put less effort of monitoring their children's academic achievement. For them, getting stable jobs and incomes are their main priority. Pursuing study in higher education only cause them to spend more money rather than saving it. Hence, the children tend to drop out from school at such young ages or their education level only stopped at lower secondary school.

Aside from family socioeconomic status, the role of school also influences the students' determination to do well in education. However, school can also become the first unit that reinforces inequality between rich and poor students. The main question is 'How do school reinforces inequality among students?'.

Firstly, through tracking system. Tracking is segregating students into different classrooms based upon their academic ability. The tracking system was used for teachers to provide them with a level of curriculum and instruction that is appropriate their needs. In short, students were divided into separated classes according to their level of academic which bring more disadvantages for them, as they cannot improve themselves. In the end of the day, students with lower socioeconomic status ended up in vocational and remedial tracks as well as students with ethnic minority-background.

Lastly, through ability grouping system in primary school, which use a similar concept with tracking system. However, teachers usually use it for reading and Mathematic subjects. Ability Grouping can be defined as an educational approach that places students in groups based on academic achievement. As a result, students may develop low self-esteem and have a mindset of getting average score as their maximum target.

To recapitulate, all authorities should play their roles in reducing inequality of education so that every students get the opportunity to succeed in future.

Social class can be defined as the divisions in society based on economic and social status. The social class has existed since the ancient times which is the reality slaps for society especially on education. The existence of social class give more privileges to upper class than the lower as mentioned in previous topic on Conflict Theory (by Karl Marx). However, in countries such as Malaysia, the students from lower class has opportunity in education to change their family's fate by performing excellently in examinations, getting the scholarships, pursue tertiary education, and finally, getting an offer for permanent job.

Nevertheless, there are some conditions which the students are given opportunities to study in early education but stop in the middle of way such as learned helplessness, vicious circle, and low self-esteem. These types of students often drop out from school early to help their parents earning some money. In this case, their main focus was to have a better financial instead of better education, but let's think a while on the importance of education. If the students not in a hurry to earn a living and get support from parents and teachers in education, of course they will finish their education in the right way. Thus, the roles of parents, teachers. schools and government to some extent help the students to change their mindset or stigma of education.

Even though, some parents could not provide better facilities and environment for their child at home, the best thing that they can do for their children is support and monitor their child's learning progress. With the assistance of homeroom teacher, parents could guide their children and give them moral supports in their learning process. Moreover, the government of Malaysia has provide many initiatives for education such as SPBT (Textbook Loan Scheme), where the students could use learning materials for free, and BPPM (Student Travel and Transportation Assistance) for students who lives in rural areas - which is hard to get an access for transportation.

In conclusion, the fate of certain social class lies in their own hands. It is up to the students (with learned helplessness, vicious circle and low self-esteem) to decide for their own future. The best thing everyone in his surrounding (parents, teachers, society, and government) can do is to provide moral supports, attentions, incentives and initiatives for them in education. It is him who need to change his mindset to become successful.

Nowadays, the utilization of technology in teaching and learning is compulsory in accordance with the aims of education to encourage the PAK-21 by the 21st century. The sudden pandemic to some extent helps the local teachers in Malaysia to learn using the technologies such as online meeting platforms, various applications to use in the teaching and learning process, and more.

In my opinion, the utilization of ICT brings positive impacts on students' ability to improve in studies. For example, they can easily access more learning resources online instead of waiting for the teachers to provide for them. Moreover, it also improves students' engagement in learning especially for visual-type students and special condition students like ADHD (having problems in concentrating).

The existence of various educational websites such as Kahoot, Quizziz, and Canva gives a hand to the teachers in preparing learning content in the most effective way. This shows that the use of ICT helps both teachers and students despite pandemics and other barriers. Now, everyone can learn anytime, and anywhere. Education is free and everyone can get access to it all online.

Malaysia is a country with a multicultural society. Thus, we need to have an education system that equally meets all races' needs. However, before the Independence Day of Malaysia, the system was biased as the British Colonization implemented the Divide and Rule Policy. As a result, several education systems were used during that time, such as Chinese and Indian vernacular schools, madrasah and tahfiz, and English schools. The opportunity for some races to pursue studies in education is plenty since some of them comes from unfortunate family.

Nonetheless, the Malaysian government keeps upgrading the education system following the current changes starting with a few reports; Barnes Report 1950, Fenn-Wu Report 1951, Education Ordinance 1952, Razak Report 1956, and Rahman Talib Report 1960 draws an outline, objectives, and policies of education. Malaysia's education policies always highlighted the importance of societal peace, harmony, respect, and togetherness between its people.

Hence, the national education system holds an essential role in achieving the main objectives of our country, which is to promote unity between races. The education reform as proposed in the current system, KSSR and KSSM (upgraded version of KBSR and KBSM), to some extent helps unify the education system as it opens wider opportunities for students regardless of races to various elective subjects and become familiar with the university system (e.g., collaboration programs between High School and local universities). Through these opportunities, the students could explore their passion in many fields as well as mingle with various types of people at school.
